Why we built Nexy.
Dave Hickling has spent twenty-five years watching Australian associations spend a fortune on platforms their members hate. Co-founder, Bond Software Group.
This series opened with a confession. We built one of the platforms it set out to criticise.
Every article since has moved the argument one step. A platform that works is not a platform that holds. Engagement is what systems count; connection is what members experience. The institutions that will define the next decade are tiered customer organisations, with membership at the apex rather than the gate, and partners as a tier of that institution, not a revenue line bolted to its side. Then we showed you a member's week when the architecture works. And last issue, what survives when AI can answer anything: the credential, the vetted partner, the standing among peers. The trust, never the information.
All of it pointed to the same unanswered question. If that is what the institution is becoming, what does the platform underneath it need to be?
We built our answer. It is called Nexy.
Nexy is a membership platform built in Australia for professional associations, unions and member-based organisations, delivered as one product on a fixed-fee model. And one product means exactly that. Nexy is not a website engine dressed up as a platform. It is not a commerce plugin bolted to somebody else's CRM. It is not a suite assembled from acquisitions wearing one logo. Every part of it, the member experience, the record, the learning, the payments, the community, was built in the same product, on the same data model, by the same team, because we have spent enough years watching what assembly costs to know the difference is not cosmetic. It is the whole product.
I have spent twenty-five years in membership software. Bond Software Group has spent twenty of them building for some of Australia's best-known member organisations, including the years we spent building the flexible, ungoverned platform this series confessed to in its first article.
That confession shaped every decision that matters.
Nexy is governed by design. One data model. One identity. One logic that applies consistently and survives the people who implemented it. Configurable to the way an organisation actually works, inside a framework that stays legible, so the platform never becomes a museum of decisions nobody can explain.
The member experience is the architecture, not a portal on the front of a database. Entry by interest. Progression by engagement. Conversation, community and recognition inside one environment, so belonging is something a member experiences rather than something an organisation reports. A database does not retain members. Connection does.
One contract, a fixed fee, in Australian dollars. Not three vendors, three contracts and an implementation bill with no ceiling.
Here is what you will not find. Case studies we have not earned. A wall of logos. Outcome statistics from clients we cannot name. This series has argued from its first article that manufactured proof is the sector's quietest disease, and we will not open with it. The argument, the architecture and the commercial model are on the table. The proof will be earned in public, the slow way.
The series continues exactly as it has. The argument is not over now that the product has a name. If anything, the standard just went up. You now know what we built. Judge every article that follows against whether we built it honestly.
Most of what is sold to this sector is old architecture wearing new paint. We built the alternative, and we are prepared to be tested on every claim in this article, in a demo, against anyone.
We built it to hold. We called it Nexy.

One essay at a time, straight to your inbox.
Writing on how member organisations actually run, from twenty years inside their systems. No product announcements dressed as insight, no drip campaigns. An essay, when it is ready.

The writing is the thinking. Nexy is where it gets built.
